Labyrinth: The Ballroom Scene

Description: A top winner of The Sim Resource's movie storytelling contest. I re-tell the Ballroom scene from Jareth the Goblin King's point of view to give insight as to his true motives behind pitting Sarah against his maze of wonders.

So much trouble over a little thing.

A young girl whose life was in shambles had made a simple wish. Thus in return was given a beautiful gift. But the gift was not for ordinary girls who took care of a screaming baby. The gift showed the girl her dreams. And strangely yet, she refused. She plunged into the heart of the maze to brave through dangers untold and to fight her way here. To solve the riddle of the Labyrinth before the clock of inevitable time struck the 13th hour.
~Flashback~

He had not given up on winning so easily. Time was nearly over and the baby would be his forever just as he had hoped that she would one day be. He would give the young girl the dreams that the real world so cruelly denied her. Anything she wanted just for the small price of one little thing. Still, she refused but not for long as she would soon forget . . .
And he had made her forget by using deception.

"Hoggle! This tastes strange," she cried out as her legs stumbled. The sudden realization that the delicious peach given to her was tainted. "Hoggle. . ."
Soon. Very, very soon. She would forget. . . EVERYTHING. The bubbles fly out the window and over the Labyrinth, coldly beautiful against the darkening sky. Sarah's hand opens slowly and the half-eaten peach falls to the ground. She stares out into the sky, mesmerized. The bubbles are approaching; dazzling, dancing bubbles. And then she hears music, haunting, spell-casting music. The bubbles come closer. Each one containing a twirling dancer, a dancer just like the one in Sarah's music box. She dances and twirls right into her dreams.

~End of Flashback~
The music changes and now Sarah finds herself inside the ballroom. It is a magnificent spectacle with all the beauty and decadence of an 18th Century ball. Magnificently dressed Dancers swirl to music in an incredibly opulent setting.
She is the picture of innocence.

Terribly self-conscious. How plain she feels amidst all this! She looks into one of the many mirrors that line the ballroom and sighs at her image. Then suddenly she sees something in the mirror that makes her gasp. Within the mirror, and in it, the reflection of a resplendent Jareth stood among the dancers. Sarah whirls around, trying to get another glimpse of Jareth.
She turns away and finds herself looking into another mirror. But in the reflection, Jareth isn't with anyone. He is standing alone, the Dancers a whirling blur around him, and he is gazing straight at her.

In a trance-like state she moves through the crowd to get a better look.
And finds herself whirling in Jareth's arms and she is the most beautiful woman at the ball. Jareth smiles down at her and the attraction between them is palpable. And he whirls her around dizzyingly, so dizzyingly that she swoons in his arms. He catches her before she can fall very far, tightening his grip around her waist.

They are dancing within a bubble of dreams; a place where pure dreams can come true.
Jareth and Sarah, continue dancing. She is smiling up at him, he has never looked more handsome. There is something more open about him, as if he, too, is caught up in the moment.

She is nearly his at last.

Then he begins a song. A song that tells Sarah he will give her everything she wants, even things she doesn't know she wants. A song that says forget it all; all the restrictions, all the powerlessness. Forget and stay in the dream.
Jareth finishes the song and Sarah looks up at him, smiling. He moves his face closer to hers and she closes her eyes.

His face comes closer, and closer...
The clock suddenly chimes. Sarah shrinks back as if the chimes of the clock were messaging, "REMEMBER, REMEMBER. . ."

And she does remember.

She turns and runs, pushing herself though the languid crowd, right into the bubble itself. Everything comes crashing through the bubble and the whole ballroom crumbles.
And as the World Falls Down, Jareth the Goblin King sadly watches as Sarah refuses his love once again. Realizes that even though he had turned the world upside down, moved the stars in heaven, and had given her everything that she had ever wanted. . . the love that he felt for her would never be returned.

The sweet girl could be so cruel.
